SHRM Certifications Awarded Accreditation

SHRM Certifications Awarded Accreditation, recap prepared by Nancy Kasmar (2016 WSHRC Certification Chair and 2017 Director-Elect)

On November 15, 2016, SHRM announced that the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications were awarded accreditation by the Buros Center for Testing. You can read SHRM’s official announcement here: http://bit.ly/2fWwjhv.

What this means for HR professionals is that SHRM’s credentials meet the highest standards in testing. The review by the Buros Center was a six-month process, based on a 1,900-page accreditation application submitted by SHRM outlining the certifications’ testing methodology and exam practices. In announcing the accreditation, Kurt F. Geisinger, Ph.D., director of the Buros Center, wrote, “We not only find that you meet our standards ... for accreditation, but we also find that you are thoroughly, competently, and appropriately meeting the mission of SHRM, and therefore, the needs of the public…”

In 2012, after extensive research, SHRM announced the SHRM Competency Model, which provides HR professionals with a comprehensive roadmap for developing the capabilities they need to advance their careers and improve their effectiveness in the workplace.

The SHRM Competency Model is fundamental to SHRM’s certifications, the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). In 2014, SHRM created these credentials to further two goals for HR professionals: to reaffirm the importance of acquiring the competencies and knowledge essential for successful job performance. In the words of Hank Jackson, SHRM’s President and CEO, during his 2016 State of the Society address, “the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge is our GPS for the road to the future. By defining our own set of competencies, we defined the future of HR.”
